With consistent improvement of technology… more options are being offered day by day. But actually, the first step in accepting and switching to these offers are knowing what exactly they offer…and the requirements.

Are you familiar with VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol? Before, I am not… but since I’ve been hearing a lot of this on my current work, I decided to study and research about it.

It is said to be the communication of the future. But before switching to it… lets know all the advantages and disadvantages so you will have a better idea if this is right option for you.

Now, you have the choice of placing your telephone calls either to VOIP device or the traditional telephones on the PSTN. (Public Switch Telephone Network) Basically, the major advantage of VOIP is the cheaper price. Why? Because VOIP is not regulated by the FCC and is not subjected to the same taxes as a normal telephone companies. And since it transmit using Internet Protocol Network and not expensive towers and lines, it cost less. International calls are also cheaper with internet phone… and some calls may even be free. If you have a wi-fi internet phone… you may bring it with you and use it anywhere wherever there is wifi hotspot.

Tempted to switch? Despite of all these benefits, of course there are some issues that needs further consideration…like speed of internet connection, voice quality and power outage back up. Since internet phone uses internet connection, speed of internet matters to ensure voice and connection quality. And during power outage without back up for power source, you may not be able to use the service since equipments such as router, adapter and modems require power supply.

So choice of VOIP usage varies among individuals. Weighing the cost and the possible savings, the side-by-side comparison of the pros and cons… will help you make up your mind. If benefits outweigh all the other negative factors… then it should be worth the switch.
